Grace and peace to you!
Well, that was a week of absolute chaos (28 Sep – 2 Oct)!!! We had kids hyped up on more chocolate coins than we could count! We had kids everywhere! Turning boxes into houses, performing impressive bicycle kicks on a jumping castle and stacking cardboard all the way to the roof! Every piece of Duplo that we could scrape together from the youth centre, was either turned into a colour coordinated tower, or a weapon. Sometimes both. It was delightful, beautiful madness!
Everyday was something different. We had a game show, a “Get ready with me, as I pack the armour of God” and a tenuous timeline. We were visited by a flock of sheep with a flustered shepherd and graced with the presence of Queen Claire!
We had roughly 26 kids each day, which is not a lot, but worked out well with the number of leaders we had! And each of those kids gave us a run for our money! 1000 questions a minute, multiple requests for piggyback rides or games of tag and 4 hours of non-stop running, left our leaders collapsing on the floor at the end of each day! The kiddies came with such excitement and an impressive amount of knowledge about who the King is. It was beautiful to see new friendships being formed, and older kids looking after some of the youngest, without being asked to. The future is bright!
On to the leaders! What a wonderful group we had. They were each so perfect for the roles they had to play. They gave it their all, never complaining, or shirking their duties (even though they were dragged out of bed before 06:00 each day during their school holidays! Thank you, parents!). When the kids started arriving each morning, it was harder to see whose smiles were bigger, the kids or the leaders. Not only were they tasked with running the games, crafts and lessons, they were also roped into the play…
The play is often the highlight of a Holiday club. It is always presented by leaders with very unbelievable costumes, scripts in one hand and props in the other. The only thing I remember from the many Holiday Clubs I attended, was during the one play, every day, the one of the leaders would boldly request a, “KitKat: Chunky”… The plays are weird but they stick.
In this year’s play, we had a balloonist, a belt maker, Vicky the villager from Jelly Wobble village and the King standing off against a bunch of bandits and the Terrifying Tangerine Turtle from Lake Tapioca. That delightful tongue twister of a title was repeated every day, multiple times. I don’t think the kids ever got it, but the leaders were very proud of themselves when they got the line right, especially when they had to say it in unison. Ultimately the King got eaten by the turtle, and it was only from inside the great, evil orange coated cardboard box that he was able to put an end to the beast!
Speaking of the King! Each day, we made our way through stories of our King’s love for us, how our King calls us to come near to Him, how our King calls us His children, all that He has done for us and all that He gives us. It was lovely seeing the kids working hard to memorize verses and occasionally, show some of the love they were learning about.
Lastly, I just want to thank every person who gave in some way to this Holiday club. To those who came in for hours during the week and weekend to cut out windows and paint boards. Thank you to those brought in boxes and all manner of recyclables for the crafts and games. Thank you to those who sponsored meals for our hungry leaders and donated snacks for the kids. Thank you to everyone who gave of their time, effort or resources for this Holiday club. It would not have come together without you! Thank you!
May you know the King.

Egypt: Please pray for Claire as she journeys through Egypt. This past week, she went to Aswan in the far south of Egypt – and has been helping out wherever she can (and resting now and then). Pray that she will be blessed and refreshed – as she sows into the lives of others. Pray that our friends in Egypt, particularly, will be deeply encouraged and “filled up” during Claire’s time there.
