Grace and peace to you!

Next week is Holiday Club!! Be prepared for the hall to be unrecognisable! We have been scheming for months and it’s almost time! The braziers are being lit, the draw bridge is being lowered and the crowns have been polished till they shine!!

In case you have been living at the bottom of a wishing well and haven’t heard: our theme this year is “Do you know the King!?”. Not to go giving spoilers or anything, but this week our kids get to see just how awesome it is, that The King, wants to know them.

Kings don’t have a great track record for getting to know their people. From famines to taxes, wars to executions, kings get a pretty bad rep for making it clear their people are there to serve and not much else. In movies we see scenes of “generous” nobility making time once in a while to hear the plight of the peasant folk, and we see comically long lines of upset people carrying a goat or chicken, desperately waiting to be seen by the one person who can fix their situation. We hear tales of Solomon’s wisdom, being bestowed on Hebrews that came before him with their woes. But that is the extent of it. No king wants to be with His people for too long. It’s messy down there!

But our King is different! Our King came to earth and got right into the messiness of it all! Our King saw our mistakes and instead of having us drawn and quartered, took the punishment Himself. And not just that, after all the pain and loss and shame, He was victorious. Our king saved His people by sacrificing Himself. No King would do that!

Our King’s sceptre is a shepherd’s crook. He leaves the comfort of the throne room and the open pasture, to go looking for the little lambs that lost their way. And those sheep that have found their way into His regal flock, are never lead astray by their shepherd. Our King has promised to walk with each of His people so that they may never feel fear and loneliness. No King would ever do that!

Every King has sons and daughters aplenty! All these princes and princesses are royal and important, but only one of them is ever heir to the kingdom. Our King has called us His children. We too are royalty through God’s love. And unlike regular children of a king, we all share our heirship. We all inherit the magnificence of heaven, that is to come. No child of a King could ever be promised so great an inheritance.

Our King invited the Little Children to come near. He invited the “unimportant” people who seem to just be ignored. He invited the sinners, the cheaters, the liars and the cowards. He invited the sick. He invited everyone who wanted to get better. Our King went and met with every kind of person, and still meets with us all today. Our King sees our struggles. He says well done to His faithful servants. Our King embraces us like a loved one whom we have not seen in a long time.

The King wants to know us. The King wants to know you.
